"France's Indo-Pacific Strategy: naval issues & industrial perspectives"

By Admiral Jean-Mathieu Rey

Deputy Chief of naval staff for international relations

French President Macron's Indo-Pacific vision introduced in 2018 in Sydney and translated the following year into a national strategy has since seen the surprising creation of the AUKUS military alliance and the development of the silk road initiatives from the People's Republic of China.

As tensions of all kinds build up between the US and China and demonstrations of military forces repeat particularly around Taiwan, what naval challenges do France and the EU face and what are the perspectives for the European industry?

Admiral Jean-Mathieu Rey is a French Rear Admiral with operational experience on board surface ships and within the naval special forces. He has operated at sea and from the sea for 25 years, mainly in the Indo-Pacific.

He has been awarded the French Order of Merit, the French Legion of Honor, and the Cross for Military.
