ESG & Sustainability Committee | Bangkok’s Air Quality & Urban Sustainability: From Policy to Practice for a More Livable City
[Recap] Bangkok’s Air Quality & Urban Sustainability: From Policy to Practice for a More Livable City
On 13 March, the ESG & Sustainability Committee of the Franco-Thai Chamber of Commerce (FTCC), co-chaired by Nattha Butler and Gilles Baurieres hosted a breakfast talk on “Bangkok’s Air Quality & Urban Sustainability: From Policy to Practice for a More Livable City.”
A special thanks to our honored guest khun Pornphrom Vikitsreth, Chief Sustainability Officer of Bangkok and Advisor to the Governor of Bangkok, for sharing valuable insights into Bangkok’s perspective and ongoing initiatives to improve air quality and urban sustainability.
Key initiatives presented during the session included collaboration with upwind provinces to reduce agricultural burning, the implementation of Low Emission Zones (LEZ) restricting heavy trucks during high PM2.5 periods, and stricter diesel vehicle smoke emission standards.
Additional measures include vehicle inspections at construction sites and industrial facilities, encouraging engine oil and air filter replacement through the Green List Plus program, and work-from-home cooperation during severe pollution periods.
Efforts are also underway to strengthen industrial emission regulations, increase public participation, install clean air rooms in BMA schools and childcare centers, and expand green spaces across Bangkok.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A discussion with Jošt V. Lavrič, PhD, offering further sciences perspectives on Bangkok’s air-quality monitoring and implementation efforts. Special thanks to Supavadee Mable C. for moderating the discussion.
We thank all participants for contributing to a meaningful dialogue on building a cleaner, healthier, and more livable Bangkok.
